Nimbuzz is looking to change the with its entrant into the market. Nimbuzz has released its all in one application, which will bridge VoIP calling, conference calls, instant messaging, group chat, file sharing across multiple instant messaging platforms, including Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo!, AIM, Jabber and ICQ.

The application also supports file sharing across 23 social networks, include heavy hitters like MySpace and Facebook. Nimbuzz is supported on quite a few devices as well, supporting over 500 handsets. The VoIP application does not support quite that many, but still an impressive 90 devices are compatible. The download is free, but you will need a data plan to use it.

Once users download the Nimbuzz application for the mobile and register as a new user, contacts from their selected IM communities are aggregated into a single contact list with icons indicating real-time presence.

"Everyone loves Skype (on the PC). But when it comes to the mobile, we believe we offer a better solution", said Tariq Dag Steinberg Khan, the chief marketing officer for Nimbuzz.

"Nimbuzz works across all the major communities and on more than 500 handsets worldwide. With this new release, we now also have a genuine free mobile VoIP solution that works on more than 90 handsets including Nokia, Samsung and LG."

The new Nimbuzz mobile VoIP application works worldwide on Nokia Symbian Series 60 devices with a Windows Mobile offering for release in June. Nimbuzz is free to download, but data usage is subject to network operator rates when used on the mobile, unless using a flat-rate data plan.

Skype’s penetration of the mobile market has been steady if not spectacular; with native applications for a number of Three network phones, and the Skype phone as well.

Utilising data packets to transmit voice calls, VoIP mobile telephony makes a lot of sense, though still hasn’t taken off in the way anticipated by revolutionising mobile and landline call costs.

O-FONE promises to make the whole process a lot easier and more transparent, enabling users to transfer their existing mobile contacts to the application.

However, like so many similar schemes before it, the only real advantages appear when a large number of your friends take up the scheme too, so it means a huge marketing push will be needed to make-or-break the technology.

In fairness, O-FONE is also trying to make the process of managing your account a lot simpler. They “promise they will be the first global MVNO 2.0 based on VoIP technology, which will include on-line multi-level billing and an on-line secured payment system.”

While this may seem a bit complex, essentially buying the necessary credits / paying your bills will be a lot more transparent and safe, and may incite potential users to try out the application at least.

However, the company does ask you to ‘try out what you’ve been missing for the last 200 years’ on their website…it’s hard to believe, when the first call was made back in 1876 with the famous phrase "Mr Watson Come here, I want to see you", the recipient thought: Well, this is OK I guess. I just wish I could send these sounds as data packets on the move to save on my line rental and call charges, and some transparency to the online payment system would be nice too.

Virgin Mobile the MVNO which just reported its earnings earlier this week, is in talks with the much smaller and troubled MVNO Helio, we have learned, even as other PE and strategic players are still circling both the companies. Helio is now controlled by SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM), after Earthlink (NSDQ: ELNK) stopped making further investments, and has been looking at options to either exit or grow. For VMUSA, as we have mentioned, some PE players have been looking at investing in the company or buying it outright, and even if the VMUSA-Helio deal comes through, the two could use some extra cash. It is no secret that MVNO carriers Helio and Virgin Mobile have seen better days. Helio has burned through its investments multiple times, and Virgin Mobile is not doing too much better. Both have had a very difficult time gaining subscribers. SK Telecom is now considering options for its U.S. venture, and one of them may include a potential merger with Virgin Mobile.

The deal would have SK Telecom dropping the cash, which would be used to buy out Virgin Mobile. Virgin Mobile would then purchase Helio in an all stock transaction. Both of the MVNO carriers are using Sprint’s network, so in theory, customers would be able to bring their existing equipment to the table of the new entity.

SK Telecom, who is the largest carrier in Korea, has been looking for ways to increase their presence in the U.S. Initially, Helio was a joint venture between Earthlink and SK Telecom, but Earthlink dropped out of the deal, after Helio did not perform as well as expected. When asked about the rumors, CEO Dan Schulman would not give a straight answer, but did hint at possible acquisition of another MVNO.

HTC unveiled its new flagship phone, the HTC Touch Diamond, featuring the Taiwanese manufacturer’s new captivating 3D touch interface called TouchFLO 3D. HTC has recently improved its original TouchFLO interface (Compare HTC’s Touch phones), and with the introduction of the new 3D touch interface, the company aims to provide animated access to people, messaging, e-mail, photos, music, weather and more. In addition, HTC is introducing a new touch-sensitive control for interacting with the Touch Diamond.

HTC Touch Diamond showing weather forecast This is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device, as you would expect from HTC. However, HTC have worked hard to improve the interface and have created TouchFLO 3D, an enhancement of the original TouchFLO system that allows for gesture control, 3D task switching (like Windows Vista) and a number of other functional and cosmetic improvements. The quality of the end-user’s experience is pretty similar to that of the very polished interface on the iPhone. You can see HTC’s demonstration video here.

It isn’t a very large device, at 102 x 51 x 11.5mm and 110 grams, the Touch Diamond is not much larger than a standard "candy bar" phone. That is considerably more compact than the iPhone, but the downside is that the Touch Diamond’s display is just a 2.8" panel rather than the very large 3.5" display on the Apple. We’re not saying that the Touch Diamond has a small screen though - it’s the same size as the Nokia N95 8GB, it’s just that iPhone has a REALLY large screen. As with the iPhone, the Touch Diamond flips automatically between landscape (wide) and portrait (tall) orientations as you rotate the screen.

Another significant feature is that the HTC Touch Diamond includes A-GPS (Assisted GPS), so it can be used with your favourite SatNav application (for example, TomTom or Google Maps). The iPhone doesn’t have GPS at all, although the N95 8GB does. One huge advantage over the Apple iPhone is the inclusion of 3.5G data, which means that the HTC Touch Diamond can download at speeds of up to 7.2 MBps where coverage allows. HTC also say that the device supports HSUPA, giving the Touch Diamond high-speed uploads too. Peculiarly, there are two versions of the Touch Diamond supporting different network frequencies, a GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 plus WCDMA 900 / 2100 version for Europe and Asia, and a GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900 plus WCDMA 850 / 1900 variant for North America. We know that HTC are capable of creating a single device that supports all these frequencies, so we don’t know why they haven’t done so with the Touch Diamond. WiFi is supported too, as is EDGE and GPRS data.

Nokia as Mobile device industry leader still enhancing new ventures to capture the user experience for Nokia devices. Developed on the S60 platform, Nokia recently unveiled 3 new applications that are set to enhance the mobile user experience.

These applications include:

- WaveSecure, a security application for mobile phones that allows consumers not just to track their handset in the event that it is lost or stolen, but also creates a backup for the phone data via the internet. Once the backup is created the owner can also wipe-out the data from the phone, ensuring that it cannot be misused. Also, the retrieved data can then be restored onto any S60 phone using a restore option via the internet.

- Web Server allows users to access their mobile phones via internet. One can access recent call logs, send messages from the phone remotely, access the photo gallery and even take photographs all through the Web Server application.

- Quick Office allows all Nokia E90 users to edit their MS Office documents from the phone itself, thus resulting in greater productivity for themselves and their teams.

"S60 on Symbian OS offers a great platform to innovate with user applications," said Mahmood Kalantar, director-business development, mobile software sales & marketing, Nokia APAC. "We see experiences converging, and people demanding more and more of the functionalities that smartphones offer, both of which highlight the significance of ease of use. The focus of our strategy is to give people choice and simplicity - key to delivering the best user experiences to add value to people’s lives."

In addition to the above, Nokia also showcased 4 applications that have been developed in India. These include Mundu IM from Geodesic; SMS Scheduler and Smart Assistant Live from Aims Migital and Voice reminder from OneView Systems.

Over the years, Nokia has been making constant innovation on the S60 platform and today it provides end-users with open access to several Web 2.0 services over the mobile. The S60 offers vendors the flexibility to design different types of devices to match the needs of the market with access options like ITU keypad or QWERTY, touch (finger and stylus), or combinations of these. Today S60 supports over 50 languages.

Recent research by Orange has indicated that texting could soon become a thing of the past. Research by TNS of 17,000 people in 30 countries revealed that once users adopt mobile instant messaging services such as AIM and MSN Messenger on their mobile phones, they reduce their use of text messages. UTalkMarketing reports.

"Of every 100 messages - including texts, emails and picture messages - sent by users without mobile instant messaging from their mobile phone or computer, 38 are text messages. Once consumers start using mobile instant messaging, the number of texts falls to 23 per 100.

Matthew Kirk, who heads Orange’s portals business, pointed out that older people tend to continue to use text messaging, and that currently the format is thriving, with Orange customers sending an average of more than 1.3bn text messages each month between November and January, up 21%."

Sony Ericsson released two new stylish cellphones G502 & Z780 both are lightweight candy bar phone, launched in a blizzard of confusion about the handset’s GPS capabilities. Although some of Sony Ericsson’s specification sheets say that the G502 has aGPS (Advanced GPS), it does not. GPS capabilities can be added through the GPS Enabler HGE-100 accessory, but this is not included in the box. And since the HGE-100 works with a wide variety of Sony Ericsson devices, the G502 is really no different from a normal midrange SE device, except that it comes with a Google Maps application preloaded.

What you do get with the G502 is a lightweight 3.5G phone that can support HSDPA downloads. The 2" 240 x 320 pixel display and basic 2 megapixel camera are adequate for most users. Media capabilties are pretty good, with support for stereo Bluetooth and an FM radio built in, in addition to the usual Sony Ericsson media player. An email client, RSS reader, web browser and a set of PIM functions make up the software, and the G502 also supports push email from Microsoft Exchange. Unlike most other 3G phones, the G502 does not support video calling.

A quick trip around the Z780’s features show that it is a bit of a mixed bag. There’s a largish 2.2" 240 x 320 pixel internal display, a pretty basic 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, an FM radio, multimedia player, RSS reader, email client, web browser and a blogging tool. The Sony Ericsson Z780 supports tri-band UMTS/HSDPA (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz) and quad-band GSM with EDGE support, so the Z780 can be used pretty much anywhere. According to the press release, the Z780 also supports video calling, although the secondary camera is hard to spot. The Z780 takes Memory Stick Micro cards to expand the internal 35MB of memory.
